Newham Hall Farm near Alnwick
This permissive path allows access to Newham Bog which comprises 13.5ha of calcereous mire, reed-bed and fencarr vegetation. The site is a remnant of the larger Embleton's Bog (ca. 100ha), situated at the base of an esker, Lough Bank, which flanks a glacial depression or kettle-hole. The site has National Nature Reserve status and is conservation importance on a European scale is recognised as a Special Area of Conservation under the Habitats Directive. Rich fen communities are centred around the Lough with the rare Schoenus nigricans-Juncus subnodulosus mire community dominant.
