Country Walk & Ride Summary

Pawton Gate near Bodmin

This group of Bronze Age Barrows were built approximately 4,500 years ago. There is a further Bronze Age Barrow on land on the other side of the farm (not open for access) as well as several others on Rosenannon Downs. The star symbols were probably placed there when the heathland was being re-claimed as agricultural land in 1950s post-war Britain. They were markers to protect the barrow from ploughing, which shows that they were appreciated as important archaeological features even when food was short and agricultural improvement was paramount.
